An evening in the corner

JP shouted "nanage aa moole beku" (English translation - I want that corner) and Chandan religiously challenged JP's vehement request. I am referring to one coveted corner on the compound wall of my home. The compound wall was about 4 feet high, something very comfortable for JP. Well the height was the least of concerns of the remaining of us, Rammi (Ramesh), KP (Prashant), Susu (Sushrutha), Chandan and Aravind.

What was happening during the evening? What were we doing on the compound wall? Who are all these people? Why that corner? Seems eerie??? Too many questions unanswered, read on….

It was the glorious years between 1997 - 2001 when we were all pursuing Bachelor of Engineering!!! You should imagine youthful, immature and vibrant youngsters sporting the universally accepted dress code, T-shirt and a dirty jeans pant, unshaven cheeks and long hair, hanging around in the portico of our home. There was a matured English scholar, KP; an excellent classical singer, Susu; the highly intellectual Rammi; an excellent painter and hockey player, JP; the extremely lucky and non-malicious Chandan; of course, Aravind - whose introduction, I am skipping. The compound used to be our evening hang-out. This is where we would spend the best 2 hours of the evening oblivious of everything else. We would forget that we had things to study, internal marks were less, attendance might come in the way of obtaining the hall ticket, competition from classmates …

So, what were we doing??? We used to sit around and talk, without the interruptions of a cell phone.. hard to imagine now?? Well that was one of the reasons why we could enjoy our compound stay so much. We used to talk just about anything under the sky. The topics ranged from movies, new developments in our locality, how some new software helped do something good, people behavior, food, cooking and of course girls! Hanging out in the portico was one of our favorite past times. Another star attraction was that we could meet almost a dozen other friends while we were there; social networking in its true sense J “Time flies when you have a nice time” – I realized that it was so true. I am happy my parents did not kick us out when all these important talks!!

The main reason for the corner is its enviable view towards the front street. We stay on a very busy street and it was the connecting road to many colleges and tuition classes…. Needless to say, young women graced the streets frequently which kind of added glamor to our otherwise dry conversations.

Not a bad way to spend the evening, eh? Does it sounds boring? I would give away a fortune to get those days back!!
